Superman: Strength #1

Sure to be one of the most essential Superman stories in years comes this first in a series of four prestige-format books, written by Scott McCloud, ("Understanding Comics" and "Reinventing Comics"). Telling two separate stories tied to Superman's past and his present, this book seeks to investigate where the Last Son of Krypton's true strength lies. An up-and-coming villain thinks he knows what Superman's strengths and weaknesses are, and plans to exploit those to his own ends. When confronting the Man of Steel, will his carefully laid plans bear fruit? And in the past, a young Clark Kent starts to question the moral code that his Earth-born parents have instilled in him and must face up to the consequences of his actions.

Phoenix: End Song #1

The Phoenix always rises again, but has it risen this time a bit prematurely? On the other side of the universe, a very confused Phoenix awakens to find itself alone and disoriented. With nothing more than a vague memory, it makes its way toward Earth, final resting place of Jean Grey, whose fate seems inexorably tied to the Phoenix, even six feet under. You may think this series comes too soon after the Phoenix's last death (you could be right), but Greg Pak shows a very keen sense of respect for all that has come before, from the early stories by Chris Claremont to the most recent Phoenix resurrection in Grant Morrison's epic New X-Men stories. Also featuring the art of popular artist Greg Land.
