HAWKMAN #38 cover

HAWKMAN #38

It isn't always easy being a Hawkman fan. From continuity reboots to almost criminal character mishandling, it's been a long tough road for the Thanagarian super hero. DC finally got a clue and allowed JSA writer Geoff Johns to fix everything that was wrong with Hawkman. Now Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray have picked up the baton and continue serving some of the finest non-code approved Hawkman stories since...well, ever. In this issue, part two of "Farewell My Enemy", the Golden Eagle returns, but it may be too late to turn the tide against the Fadeaway man and his crew of revenge-minded miscreants.

DAREDEVIL #71 cover

DAREDEVIL #71

Brian Michael Bendis begins "Decalogue", surely his most ambitious Daredevil storyline to date. Told within the framework of the Ten Commandments, "Decalogue" reveals what happened after daredevil took over as the Kingpin of Hell's Kitchen. No detail will be spared, aa all about that bloody year will be told. Artist Alex Maleev and colorist Dave Stewart continue to astound with their subtle and masterful visuals---this book is nothing without if not a team effort, and it always shows.

AUTHORITY: REVOLUTION #6

Even after the events of the last few issues, almost nothing could prepare you for the fallout! Just be ready for anything and of course the always amazing storytelling skills of Ed Brubaker, who brings a richer and more fully realized sense of character depth to the Authority than has been seen since creator Warren Ellis' initial run. And artist Dustin Nguyen improves with every issue, creating the kind of visual scope necessary for a book like the Authority.

SPELLBINDERS #1 cover

SPELLBINDERS #1

Marvel can do non-super hero books! It doesn't happen often, but when it does, it's usually an interesting ride. This book starts off well enough, perhaps just a bit too Vertigo-meets-WB teen drama, but the potential for a great series is firmly set in place. Set in Salem, Massachusetts, issue one introduces the main players, chief among them Kim Vesco, a transplant by way of Chicago. Little does she realize just how timely her arrival is, as she is immediately thrust into a world where magic is mundane and witches have fan clubs! Time will tell what role she must play, as dictated by writer Mike Carey, with art by Mike Perkins and Drew Hennessy.

RUNAWAYS #2 cover

RUNAWAYS #2

"Season Two" continues as the Runaways have just received a chilling visit from their future, and now they must find the key to keeping that future from ever coming to pass. The kids must tackle the task of locating a mutant who may one day lay waste to the Marvel Universe, but chances are he won't come willingly. Writer Brian Vaughan sets the stage for what will undoubtedly be another pulse-pounding, thrill-a-minute run on what Wizard magazine calls "the best original concept from Marvel in thirty years" ...and you wouldn't question Wizard, would you?

JLA CLASSIFIED #5 cover

JLA CLASSIFIED #5

This book, part two of "I Can't Believe It's Not The Justice League" is definitely of the love-it-or-hate-it variety. Fans of the 80's JLA run by Giffen & co. will flock to this like moths to a flame, while followers of a more big-screen approach a la Grant Morrison will want to head for cover. In this issue, not much happens, save some very funny banter and a visit to JSA headquarters for a little "power effective quotient" recruiting. Oh yeah, and Booster Gold messes things up in a really big way.

NEW INVADERS #6 cover

NEW INVADERS #6

This book isn't really given enough credit for quality. CP Smith's visual style takes some getting used to, but it definitely fits the mood of the book. Allan Jacobsen has a knack for sparse dialogue and consistent, updated characterizations of Golden Age Marvel super heroes and their successors. This issue features the return of Captain America to the ranks of the Invaders, whether he wants it or not. Grudgingly, Cap joins the team in foiling the plot of mad Atlantean Lord Meranno, who schemes to fulfill an ancient Atlantean prophecy.
