From AiPT: I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this first issue but found myself totally enraptured by the narrative flow, characters, and direction. Mixing equal parts character, conflict, and good storytelling, Excalibur is alluringly charming. A strong yin and yang between Betty and Apocalypse Sets the stage for a new kind of conflict for the mutants Clean art that has quite a story unfolding via color and character position The "data" pages are interesting but seem to be extra back matter more than anything else

Delving deep into eldritch world-building and the tangled family saga of Betsy, Brian, and Jamie Braddock, writer Tini Howard delivers a whole new flavor to the X-Men here. Accompanied by the stalwart, heroic art of Marcus To and Erick Arciniega, both of whom lean into the off-beat swagger of the title, Howard builds up her own cross-dimensional corner of "Dawn of X." Though the baggage of the Braddock clan drags this debut down a bit, the witchy, larger-than-life potential of this new Excalibur is very much present in this first issue, along with more than a little trademark X-Men soapiness to boot.
From IGN: Unlike Marauders, which has basically nothing to do with the original band of mutant killers employed by Mister Sinister, Excalibur does dabble in some of the expected tropes. This series is heavily centered around the Braddock family in general and Psylocke in particular. It's also heavily steeped in the mythology of Camelot and Otherworld and even features Morgan le Fay as a major antagonist. But in other ways, the new series is a major deviation from the norm. Most of the old Excalibur mainstays are ignored in favor of a new team that includes iconic X-Men characters like Gambit, Rogue and Jubilee. And that's to say nothing of the central role played by Apocalypse.
From CBR: The X-Men have often ventured into different genres apart from the standard superhero fare, and the more fantasy-oriented Children of the Atom have defended the Marvel Universe as the magical superhero team Excalibur. First created by Chris Claremont and Alan Davis as a British offshoot of the X-Men, the title is part of the first wave of series in Marvel's line-wide relaunch of the X-Men franchise Dawn of X. The new series, by Tini Howard and Marcus To, feels like a natural extension of the dramatic new status quo for Marvel's Merry Mutants while forging a direction unlike those of the previously launched ongoing series out of the publishing initiative.
From Monkeys Fighting Robots: Much like the other first issues, Excalibur #1 focuses more on the story, characters, and future rather than action. Writer Tini Howard’s slow paced nature works in its favor by helping ease in readers to the magic based side of X-Men. Howard elegantly pushes the plot forward by taking time to introduce each character, motivation, and how they all tie together.
