Shang-Chi mini-series coming from Marvel

Marvel Comics

Coming this June, one of the most prominent Asian-American superheroes, Shang-Chi getting his own five-issue mini-series. The Marvel Studios movie, “Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings” is coming to theaters in February 2021. But before then, author/artist Gene Luen Yang his making his first-ever Marvel Comics mini-series. Known for his graphic novel American Born Chinese, Yang takes the Marvel character, who first appeared in 1973 mainly as a sidekick, and put him in the spotlight.

“I just don’t think that kids growing up today, for the most part, have that same sort of embarrassment. I think for a lot of them, it sort of flipped. You definitely saw that with ‘Black Panther.’ I think that conversation is changing too for Asian-Americans.” (NYT)

Along with Yang, the series will be drawn by Dike Ruan (Black Cat, Spider-verse), and Philip Tan (Spawn, Uncanny X-Men) drawing flashbacks.

While we have to wait for 2021 for the movie release, and the occasional set photo leaks, the first issue of the series will arrive at your favorite comic book store by June.
